Is It Real Soap?
Soap is what you get when a fat reacts with an alkali, a process called saponification. That reaction is what separates real soap from a synthetic detergent bar, which is built from surfactants instead. Melt and pour bases are fully saponified: the palm and palm kernel oils have already been turned into soap, so the bar you make is soap in the same sense a cold process bar is.
Not every product sold as "soap" is soap. Many bars on a drugstore shelf are detergent bars. Saponify's bases are detergent-free, SLES-free, and SLS-free, which is worth knowing if that distinction matters to you or your customers.
The Lye Question
All real soap is made with lye. There is no way around it: saponification needs an alkali, and for bar soap that alkali is sodium hydroxide, better known as lye. The part that reassures most people is that none of it remains in the finished soap. The lye is entirely consumed in the reaction, turning the oils into soap and glycerin.
With melt and pour, that reaction already happened before you bought the base. There is no lye in the base and none for you to measure, mix, or handle. "Naturally Derived" Is Not the Same as "Natural"
This is where honest labeling matters. A quality melt and pour base is naturally derived: most of what is in it comes from plants. The soap itself is made from palm and palm kernel oils, and glycerin is both a natural byproduct of that saponification and added to the base to keep it clear and re-meltable. A base also contains a few processing ingredients, like propylene glycol, a humectant common in foods and cosmetics. These are safe, well-understood ingredients, and they are what make the base meltable and clear rather than a plain bar. Glycerin is worth calling out, because it is a feature and a trade-off at once. It is what makes melt and pour feel moisturizing, and it is also why the bars can sweat in humid air, drawing water to their surface. When a kit or a colorant is marketed as "all-natural" or "organic," it is fair to be skeptical and read the ingredient list. The honest bases do not need the overclaim.

The ten opaque bases are the same clear formula plus titanium dioxide; the six translucent bases leave it out. The named bases take that finished base and blend in their namesake: the milk in a Goat Milk base, the honey in a Honey base, the butter or oil in a Shea or Olive base. Those are added to the base at a controlled amount, not saponified into it, which is why a specialty base behaves reliably where the same butter stirred in at home would soften the bar.
How to Keep Your Finished Bars Natural
You cannot make a melt and pour base 100% natural, but you control most of what goes in after it melts. To keep bars as natural as the method allows:
